The bridport prize

The Bridport Prize is an international creative writing competition established in 1973 by the Arts Centre’s founder Peggy Chapman-Andrews. Today it is Bridport Art Centre’s flagship project raising vital funds for our work. With categories in poetryshort storiesflash fiction and the opening chapters of a novel – and top prizes of £5,000 -the competition annually attracts many thousands of entries from across the globe.


The Bridport Prize is open to writers of any nationality writing in English, 16 years old and over at the time of the closing date.


The Bridport


All entries submitted can be on any subject, and written in any style or form.

  • Poems: 42 lines max. No minimum. Title not included.
  • Short stories: 5000 words max. No minimum. Title not included.
  • Flash fiction: 250 words max. No minimum. Title not included.
  • Novel: 8,000 words max. 5,000 words minimum from opening chapters PLUS 300 word synopsis. Please note: the novel award is currently only open to writers in Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Rules for Application         

  • Entries must be in English. Entries must never have been published, self-published, published on any website, blog or online forum, broadcast nor winning or placed (as in 2nd, 3rd, runner up etc) in any other competition.
  • Entry fees
    £8 for each submitted flash fiction
    £9 for each submitted poem
    £10 for each submitted short story
    £20 for each submitted novel
